竹東古時候的舊名是樹杞林，據說在清朝初年，先民們入墾此地之前，這裡本是一片廣闊的溪埔荒地，林深草密，尤其是長了一大片的象棋樹【學名樹杞樹】，所以先民就將本地命名為象杞林或樹杞林，一直到了大正九年(民國九年，行政區域調整，因為本地位於縣城新竹的東方而改名為竹東。

　 「竹東鎮」位置接近新竹縣中央，居四方交通要衝與入山孔道，自古已是人文薈萃之地。竹東國小創於民國前十四年，是所百年老校附近的中山、大同、二重、沙坑等國小都是他的分校繼而獨立的。

Jhudong Elementary School has already established for one hundred years.   

It's named Jhudong because it is located at east of Hsin-Chu County.

That's the reason that our school is named Jhudong Elementary School and we are the first elementary school in Zhu-Dong.
